In the current technological age, carrying the Holy Quran with us has become easier and more accessible than ever before thanks to mobile opportunities. While it once required physical effort to reach a Mushaf or to take it everywhere, today thousands of pages of exegesis, translation, and original text fit into our pockets. However, this great convenience has brought with it the issue of 'digital etiquette.' When reading the Quran on a digital screen, one should act with the awareness that this act is different from reading an ordinary article. The light of the divine word has the same sanctity even if it appears in digital pixels. Therefore, it is a requirement of the believer's insight to adopt a stance close to traditional Mushaf etiquette even when reciting in a digital environment.
From a legal (fiqh) perspective, whether the verses appearing on digital screens have the status of physical paper—that is, whether they can be touched without ritual ablution (wudu)—is a subject debated among scholars. Although the general consensus is that the phone itself is not a Mushaf, it is a sign of deep reverence for the divine word to avoid touching that specific point while verses appear on the screen, or to begin reading in a state of ritual purity if possible. In accordance with the spirit of the verse 'None shall touch it except the purified,' being in a state of ritual purity while engaging with the Quran on digital platforms will increase the spiritual blessing manifold. The greatest advantage of digital applications is that they facilitate reading for people of all ages with features like adjustable font sizes, night mode, and eye-friendly themes. Especially for our elders with visual impairments or youth experiencing eye fatigue, being able to enlarge fonts allows for a clear view of the articulation of Arabic letters, enabling a flawless recitation.
The greatest obstacle when reading the Quran in the digital world is divided attention. Turning off phone notifications or switching to airplane mode before beginning a reading session allows one to enter the verses with full concentration. A recitation squeezed between social media notifications or calls may not provide the depth the heart expects. Furthermore, the search and index features of digital guides provide immense speed when searching for verses on a topic; this makes it easier to integrate the Quran into life. Utilizing technology with this intention transforms an entertainment tool into a 'reward machine.' Positioning your phone not just as a communication tool but also as a spiritual consultant, a Mushaf, and a guide to hidayah that you can access at any moment will be your strongest defense against the distraction of the modern age.
